Skills Set for Founders

Philipp Heinicke has spent the past ten years helping academic teams turn research and ideas into startups. At Science & Startups, he supports teams through scholarships, consulting, infrastructure, and access to relevant networks, while helping them assess whether their ideas could be a good fit for future programmes.

Turning a research idea into a startup requires more than technical expertise. Founders need to understand the problem they are solving, communicate their value clearly, build effective teams, engage with users and partners, and navigate the early decisions that shape a young company. This workshop invites participants to explore the skills and mindsets that support the transition from academic work to entrepreneurship.

What participants will do

Participants will reflect on the strengths they already bring to a founding team and identify areas they may need to develop or complement through co-founders, advisors, or early hires. They will discuss the practical challenges of moving from research to venture building and consider how support programmes, networks, and targeted resources can help them take the next step.

What to expect

Participants can expect an open and practical exchange about the realities of founding a startup from an academic background. They will leave with a clearer view of the skills required at different stages, ideas for strengthening their founder profile or team, and an understanding of where to look for further support.
