{"id":9357,"date":"2026-06-03T13:43:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-03T13:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ai-grid.org\/?p=9357"},"modified":"2026-06-11T14:21:51","modified_gmt":"2026-06-11T14:21:51","slug":"beyond-academia-career-transition-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ai-grid.org\/en\/event\/beyond-academia-career-transition-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"Beyond Academia: Supporting AI Researchers in Their Transition to the Professional World"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"9357\" class=\"elementor elementor-9357\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d7375ab e-ecs-flex e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"d7375ab\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;jet_parallax_layout_list&quot;:[],&quot;ecs_container_type&quot;:&quot;flex&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-216adde elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"216adde\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In early June, more than 50 doctoral students, postdocs, and advanced master\u2019s students gathered in Hamburg to address a question that concerns many researchers: How can one successfully make the transition from academia to industry?<\/p><p>The event was organized by AI Grid, <a href=\"https:\/\/softwarecampus.de\/\">Software Campus<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/showcase\/women-in-ai-germany\/posts\/?feedView=all\">Women in AI Hamburg<\/a> and the Artificial Intelligence Center Hamburg (ARIC), with support from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nordakademie.de\/\">NORDAKADEMIE.<\/a> The goal was to provide guidance, impart practical tools, and facilitate an open exchange about career paths outside of academic research.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-eff7592 e-ecs-flex e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"eff7592\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;jet_parallax_layout_list&quot;:[],&quot;ecs_container_type&quot;:&quot;flex&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dd661cf elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"dd661cf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><b style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\">Reframing Research Skills<\/b><\/p><p>To kick things off, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/arne-ewald\/\">Arne Ewald<\/a> (NORDAKADEMIE), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/dr-madhura-t\/\">Dr. Madhura Thosar<\/a> (Jungheinrich Digital Solutions) and Dr.-Ing. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/dr-ing-maryna-feierabend-7362165\/\">Maryna Feierabend<\/a> (Hamburger Energiewerke) shared their own career paths bridging research and practice. Their experiences made it clear that the transition to industry often fails less due to a lack of skills than to the question of how these skills can be made visible and communicated.<\/p><p>Following the keynote speeches, participants discussed career paths outside of academic research in small groups together with ten mentors who have themselves successfully made the transition from academia to industry. During a \u201croundtable\u201d on academic achievements in the corporate world and a mini-workshop on \u201cHow to Pitch Your Skills for a Business Job,\u201d they worked on making their scientific skills visible and understandable to the business world. The direct exchange with the mentors provided practical insights into different career paths and challenges when transitioning to industry.<\/p><p><b>More Than Just a New Job<\/b><\/p><p>In addition to practical questions about applications, interviews, and career paths, personal aspects also came into focus. Many discussions revolved around finding an environment that aligns with one\u2019s own interests and values, as well as the courage to try new paths.<\/p><p>A recurring theme was the importance of networking. The exchange with mentors who have already successfully made the transition from academia showed participants that career transitions rarely follow a straight path and that no one has to walk this path alone.<\/p><p><b>Bridges between academia and industry<\/b><\/p><p>The central takeaway from the workshop: Researchers already possess many of the skills needed in industry, startups, and public organizations. The key is to recognize one\u2019s own added value and communicate it convincingly.<\/p><p>Through open discussions, practical exercises, and direct exchanges between early-career researchers and experienced professionals, \u201cBeyond Academia\u201d created a space for orientation, new perspectives, and valuable connections. It was precisely this bridge between scientific expertise and professional practice that made the workshop particularly valuable for many participants.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AI Grid konnte sich die Gelegenheit nicht entgehen lassen, Teil der weltweit bekanntesten IT- und Technologiemesse zu sein.
